BEGIN Main body of content

From the outset, Hogan Lovells provides a wide range of challenging work for lawyers who will assume responsibility from day one. They experience an excellent team atmosphere and will work not only in their local office but on cross border work.

New colleagues are assigned to a partner and join the practice area which best meets their interests at that stage, taking into account any specialist knowledge they may already have. From the very beginning, associates work together with their colleagues on real cases and are fully involved in the high quality work we do for our clients. The partner who is responsible for them acts as a mentor, supervises the workflow and discusses their handling of cases with all members of the team. This intensive on the job training is supplemented by our innovative people development programme for all associates.

Around three years after joining Hogan Lovells, our associates are eligible for promotion to senior associates in recognition of their performance and confirming their future potential. Early and clear messages about their prospects of becoming a partner or counsel provide transparency about their future career.

Hogan Lovells offers the counsel position as an alternative career path for experienced lawyers. Counsels have permanent contracts as lawyers in a leadership role handling challenging projects. They are the first point of contact for their clients, and are integrated into the practice area's leadership structures. They often assume responsibility for supervising and developing more junior associates. By offering this alternative career path, the firm has broken with the all too prevalent "up-or-out" principle and is able to retain the know-how of outstanding lawyers.

Hogan Lovells regularly elects new partners from within the firm. The individual prospects of promotion depend on professional and entrepreneurial skills.
