Hogan Lovells trains around 100 Referendare (trainees) a year during their law firm placement [Anwaltsstation] or elective placement [Wahlstation], as well as training Referendare who have a part-time job with the firm in addition to their placement elsewhere [juristische Nebentätigkeit].

The time as a Referendar is a unique opportunity to get to know each other and to gain a deep insight into the work of an international law firm. Many of our associates based their decision to join Hogan Lovells on their experience during their Referendar placement. Referendare work with colleagues on current cases in a department of their choice and are well-integrated into our high quality client work. An experienced lawyer is on hand as a mentor to offer guidance at all times.

We offer (a limited number of) part-time job opportunities for research assistants [wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter] at all of our German offices for those working on their doctoral thesis or during a Referendariat. Research assistants gain practical experience in many interesting and challenging projects, and maybe even working on publications, allowing them to gain an insight into the day-to-day work of our lawyers.

Referendare and research assistants participate in our extensive, structured training programme, which involves regular seminars and lectures in all of our offices. They are also invited to take part in all of the office's social activities, including the annual summer and Christmas parties, regular happy hours, Referendar nights and other get-togethers.

As well as their Referendar placement in one of our German offices, a limited number of Referendare have the option of spending around two months in our offices in London, New York Alicante.
